At some point, people are going to ask the ultimate question-What’s the purpose of life? Outside of what the giver of life tells about the purpose of life, different people have different answers to this age-old question.
Religion is trying to help people come up with answers. Here are a few:
submission;
fulfilling the purpose that God has you for:
to convert other people to your religion;
to go to heaven;
to take care of this planet;
to break free from the cycle of life;
to get enlightenment and many other.
Secularism’s attempt in answering this question is varied and complex. Here are a few answers: to be happy (this one is even engraved in the American conscienceless through the declaration of independence where the “pursuit” of happiness is one of the “unalienable rights” and is guaranteed in the new republic); to be useful; to be compassionate; since you come in this world with nothing life’s purpose is to making something out of nothing; to live together in harmony and peace with others etc.
Others believe that life has no meaning therefore indulgence and self-fulfillment should be life’s focus. With so many seemingly plausible attempts to answer this question, a person may be confused unless he goes to the author and giver of life and find out what he says to his creatures about the purpose of their lives.
If you look in the right place, surprisingly the answer to this question is simple. God did not put his creation here on earth to wonder in confusion.
He revealed His will to us in His word and in it we find man’s purpose of existence simply stated through the great prophet Isaiah “Everyone who is called by My name, and whom I have created for My glory, Whom I have formed, even whom I have made.” (Isaiah 43:7). Man was created for God’s glory and honor. He was not created just to do good for the sake of good. That will bring man the glory and honor. Non-believers and pagans can do that. The focus of life is God and its purpose is God’s glory! Live for Him!
