Albert Einstein and Making Disciple Makers

Updated: May 31, 2023

You may have heard the saying attributed to Albert Einstein that “The most powerful force in the universe is compound interest”. Whether Einstein actually said it is still under question, but that doesn’t negate how powerful this “compound” force really is. Put it in another way, if you start with one cent and double it every day on the 30th day you will have 10,737,418.24 (Ten million, seven hundred thirty seven thousand, four hundred eighteen dollars and twenty four cents) Yes, 10.73 million. Wow! I think you see it now!

What if we take the same concept and apply it to the Great Commission that Christ gave us to make disciples of all people, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit and teaching them to actually obey his commandments, do you think the world will be different? I strongly believe it will. The following scenario will give a glimpse into the vastness of the impact we could have in the world by making Christ’s last words on earth our first earthly priority, for the Great Commission has exponential growth built into it.

Consider the following – You start with twelve disciples and if each disciples simply doubles after year one, then it is 12 x 2^29 = 6,442,450,944 people. (Dan Meyer-Chief Actuary Access Insurance Company: March 18, 2014) That’s six billion, four hundred fourty-two million, four hundred fifty thousand, nine hundred forty-four people. By the end of year 30 the entire globe will be reached with the good news of Christ. It will only take one generation to reach the entire world. So the task of reaching the world is not an impossibility but a matter of obedience.
